JESUS, in today's gospel, invites us, "Come to me all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart and you will find rest for your selves. For my yoke is easy, and my burden light."

How fitting to us in the modern times, we who live tiresome and stressful lives! Ours are days with hectic schedules - working around the clock yet feeling that the time at our disposal will never be enough. We exert effort, only to exert more effort afterwards. We earn money, only to realize that we need to earn more. We accomplish, only to aspire for greater accomplishments, and we attain our goals only to set higher ones. In a rat-race world, nothing can truly provide us the full satisfaction and lasting happiness that we look for.

True enough, for human fulfillment can be seen only in God. Our longing can be met fully only by God, and our selves made complete only by our relationship with the Lord. Wealth, status, degrees, titles, fame, prestige, power, physical and material pleasures - all these are elements of a passing world. Only when we make Jesus the core, the center, and the very essence and meaning of our lives can we find true joy and genuine peace in our hearts.

This message can be captured in the beautiful song entitled, In Him alone (Bukas Palad, 1995). It goes this way:

"In Him alone is our hope. In Him alone is our strength. In Him alone are we justified. In Him alone are we saved. What have we to offer that does not fade or wither? Can the world ever satisfy the emptiness in our hearts? In vain we deny. When will you cease running in search of hollow meaning? Let His love feed the hunger in your soul till it overflows. With joy you yearn to know. In Him alone is our hope. Unto Him I pour out my heart. He alone will save me with His love and mercy."

Yes, in him alone can we find rest.
