Lawmaker backs village polls in October

CONGRESSMAN Jerry P. Treñas said over the weekend that there are no overtures in the House of Representatives for the postponement of barangay and youth elections on October 25 this year.

Treñas said he is pushing for the elections and it might be too late for barangay heads all over the country to call for the postponement of elections of all barangay officials and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) officials.

He also admitted that Congress has not yet enacted a new law calling for postponement of barangay elections and the term of barangay officials will automatically end by October this year.

If no law was enacted by October to postpone the elections, the local chief executive is empowered to appoint the barangay captains and other barangay officials until such time there is an elections called by the Commission on Elections.

On the other hand, all barangay heads in the country are expected to attend the three-day Liga ng mga Barangay national convention and seminar workshop in Metro Manila on July 29-31, 2010. Transportation expenses will be taken from the barangay's own development fund.

The barangay captains are expected to pass a resolution urging congressmen and senators to enact a law calling for the deferment of barangay elections until 2012. (Lydia C. Pendon)
