Transmission line failure causes massive brownout

CENTRAL Negros Electric Cooperative (Ceneco) said the hour-long power outage in some areas on Friday was due to the emergency tripping off of the transmission lines of the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP).

Roel Venus, Ceneco's Consumer Services Division chief, said that the power interruption affected the whole areas of Silay City, Talisay City, Murcia, Bago City and Bacolod City. It started at 9:46 a.m. and lasted until 10:23 a.m.

Cherryl Tortal, Ceneco's public relations officer, added that the blackout also affected the service areas of Negros Occidental Electric Cooperative (Noceco) in southern Negros as well as the coverage area of VRESCO in northern Negros.

Tortal said that the blackout was caused by some failures in the transmission lines of the NGCP, the electricity highway through which electric power passes from the generation companies to the electric cooperatives for distribution to the electric consumers. (Teresa Ellera-Dulla)
