Basyang death toll now at 68 (10:32 a.m.)

MANILA -- Three more people were confirmed dead Sunday due to Typhoon Basyang (international codename: Conson), bringing the death toll to 68.

National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC) reported that 41 of those killed in the typhoon are from Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, and Quezon), while 16 are from Central Luzon and 11 from Bicol Region.

Typhoon Basyang also left 30 persons injured and 84 others missing as of Sunday, said the NDCC.

The three fatalities recently recovered by authorities were believed to be passengers of MB Joan 1 and 2, which sank off Polilo Island in Quezon province during the height of Basyang.

The Office of Civil Defense expects the number of casualties to increase in the coming days because several victims have not yet been recorded. (Sunnex)
