Expat backs Cebu rugby

A New Zealander based in Cebu for the past two years was more than glad to find out about the Cebu Dragon Rugby Club, home to some of the skilled rugby players who share the same passion for the intense sport.

Gary Cochran, who plays rugby with his son, sponsored the Carmen Copper Corp. Cup last July 18 at the Cebu International School Field in support of what he described as a social sport.

“No matter where you go around the world, rugby is a great game and gives a chance for people to meet,” said Cochran.

The main game featured a Filipino vs. voreigners match between the Low Flying Dragons and the Cebu Dragons.

With the exemplary performance of Andrew Gibson, who scored the most tries, the Cebu Dragons dumped the Low Flying Dragons, 10-5.

Meanwhile, the team of rookies from the Komodo Dragons defeated the Chillex Pink Dragons, 8-1, in a contest between male and female players.

“It’s amazing. I have never seen women play with such talent. They have good skills. It was a good game and I enjoyed it,” Cochran said.

According to him, last Sunday’s event was just a start and he plans to sponsor another game. He will also try to get more people to support it.

“The idea is to invite everyone interested to play rugby, to join the team and participate in different events of the club,” he said.
