Mayors back Blanco for PCL presidency

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO – The influential Pampanga Mayors League (PML) on Tuesday said that mayors in the province are backing the candidacy of Bacolor First Councilor Efren “Steekie” Blanco as the next president of the Pampanga Councilors League (PCL).

Floridablanca Mayor Eddie Guerrero, PML secretary general, said in a telephone interview that the league is 100 percent behind the candidacy of Blanco.

“Me and my fellow mayors have come to an understanding that we (PML) will support Steekie for the PCL top post. He has served the PML as secretary for a long time and we believe that he will be of great service to the Sangguniang Panlalawigan (Provincial Board) as ex-officio board member representing his fellow councilors in the province”, Guerrero said.

Blanco, who is a former vice-mayor of Bacolor and now the incumbent first councilor, said he is more than willing to discharge his duties as PCL president.

The other candidates vying for the PCL presidential post are City of San Fernando Councilor Dein Henson and Porac and Councilor Mike Tapang, president of the Porac Quarry Association.

Blanco said that he is yet to talk to the other contenders, saying that he wishes to come to a mutual understanding with them and that he does not wish for the PCL to be divided by another political exercise, but rather be united in the service of their fellow councilors and their constituents.

Henson, a former president of the Sangguniang Kabataan (youth council) and now a two-time city councilor is reportedly running as an independent candidate.

The three top councilors are hoping that they could get the votes of their fellow councilors in the 21 municipalities.

During the term of Lubao Mayor Dennis Pineda, former president of the PML, Blanco has served with full intent and enthusiasm the league as assistant secretary general in charge of the preparation of vital documents, resolutions and activities.

The PML said Blanco has worked well and he has been part of several achievements and projects that had been accomplished in their respective municipalities which earned him the respect of the local officials.

Blanco or “Steekie” to his supporters and friends had once served in 1989 as village chief of Cabambangan and was former president of the Liga ng mga Barangay. He has also represented the league in the Sangguniang Bayan of Bacolor.

He was elected vice-mayor and presiding officer of the municipal board from 1998 to 2001. (Chris Navarro)
