Teacher shot dead inside school

A FOURTH year high school teacher was shot to death inside Tubod Elementary School in Minglanilla at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Victim Serafin Villahermosa, 36, was on his way home together with three other teachers when he was shot by an unidentified gunman.

He fell near the elementary guidance counselor’s office.

Villahermosa was on his way to the parking lot, where the principal's car was waiting for him.

PO2 Jade Abrica of the Minglanilla police said the victim had received threats.

“He previously received death threats. We’re conducting a deeper investigation to establish the motive,” he said.

Cebu City Police Office Director Patrocinio Comendador Jr. said he informed Senior Supt. Erson Digal that the wife of Villahermosa is the sister of businesswoman Lalaine Jore, who was slain in Cebu City in February last year.

Comendador said the information he relayed might help the provincial police in determining the motive of the attack.

Comendador said the city police force has provided security personnel to the family of Jore as they have been receiving threats since the victim was killed.

The family of Jore, Comendador said, rushed to Minglanilla last Monday after learning that Villahermosa was shot and killed.

Villhermosa sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was declared dead on arrival at the South General Hospital.

His co-teacher Rogelio Maunes, 36, was wounded in his right arm.

Waiting

Maunes was in front of Villahermosa when the shooting occurred.

The suspect, who entered the school past noon, was reportedly sitting on a plant box near a drinking station while waiting for Villahermosa.

He shot the victim at close range and shot Maunes when he turned around and shouted.

The suspect has stubble on his chin and was wearing shades, a pink cap and black jacket, a pupil said.

Maunes underwent an operation but his condition remained stable as of yesterday.

When the shooting occurred, Aladin Cabanig, a teacher, said they thought it was lightning.

But a pupil told him a teacher was gunned down.

Villahermosa’s co-teachers said the victim was a disciplinarian but was kindhearted.

The high school guidance counselor, who refused to be named, said Villahermosa was a religious person.

Another teacher said Villahermosa never failed to attend the novena masses at the Basilica del Sto. Niño on Fridays.
