NPC to vote Belmonte for House Speaker (1:05 p.m.)

MANILA -- The Nationalist People's Coalition (NPC), with 40 district and 10 party-list congressmen, will be supporting the administration party's bet for the House Speakership post, Representative Feliciano "Sonny" Belmonte (Fourth district, Quezon City).

NPC spokesperson and Representative Rex Gatchalian (First district, Valenzuela) explained that the NPC wants to partner with the Liberal Party (LP), the majority party in the lower chamber of Congress, because they are also pushing for the legislative agenda of President Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III.

“In this coming Congress, after consulting all our members, there was a group consensus to stay with the majority, all 40 of us,” Gatchalian told reporters.

Some of the party-list representatives who will also vote for Belmonte are those of groups Abono and An Waray, and the LPG Marketers Association, Inc. (LPGMA) and 1st Consumers Alliance for Rural Energy (1-CARE), who are both awaiting proclamation from the Commission on Elections (Comelec).

Gatchalian added that the ideologies and platforms of the NPC and LP don't differ much which helped the party to go with the majority.

NPC is likewise pushing for the advancement in basic education, health care and improving good governance, likewise LP, or any other political party. (Kathrina Alvarez/Sunnex)
