Barrita: Mike Rama’s ‘Superbody’

CEBU City Mayor Mike Rama has formed a Superbody Beautification Council (SBC) for the city and named as its head Mariquita Salimbangon Yeung, a philanthropist and close friend of Cebu Gov. Gwen Garcia.

Wait, Rama’s “superbody” is not about ripped muscles and washboard abs like in some canned tuna ads but is tasked mainly with the beautification of the whole length of Osmeña Blvd.

This, however, may have touched some sensitive chords in the superego of someone who thinks he has the power to reward those who follow his whims and punish those who don’t.

Yeung’s appointment irked the former mayor, Rep. Tomas Osmeña (Cebu City, south), who said commissioners of the city’s Parks and Playgrounds Commission should resign because Rama bypassed them in his beautification programs.

But Mike said the commission still has the parks and the playgrounds while his “superbody” will have Osmeña Blvd., which is neither a park nor a playground.

Like it nor not, the “superbody” formed to beautify Osmeña Blvd. may turn Rama’s relationship with the former mayor “ugly.”

Gov. Gwen came to Yeung’s defense, saying the last time she heard, there’s a new mayor in Cebu City Hall and that’s Rama, who calls the shots no matter who gets irked.

“What do you expect from this arrogant little boy who thinks he owns Cebu and continues to also think he is mayor of Cebu?” she said.

Yeung, on the other hand, said she accepted the challenge to head the “superbody” because of her love for Cebu.

Do you really think being a non-Cebu City voter disqualifies one from helping beautify the city?

Rep. Pablo Garcia (Cebu, 2nd district) said he plans to file again a bill that, if enacted into law, will bind the government to honor annulments granted by the Catholic Church, sparing couples the pain and expense of going to court.

In other words, what the Church had set asunder, the government should not bind together.
