Here comes CDU

THE Cebu Doctors’ University will be fielding a lean team in the 10th season of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation (Cesafi) which will kick off either late July or early August at the University of San Carlos Gym.

CDU hopes to have a better performance this year as it will field teams in volleyball for men and women division, badminton, table tennis, chess, scrabble and an athletics team of eight runners.

“Our teams are trying play to the best of their abilities and strength considering the hectic schedules and demands of their respective courses,” said CDU atlhetic director Cathy Vestil.

She added this will be the third time CDU has joined the premiere inter-school competition.

During the Cebu Amateur Athletic Association, the predecessor of Cesafi, CDU was the powerhouse in basketball under coach Yayoy Alcoseba.

But CDU is not planning on reviving its basketball team just yet.

“We are easing into it slowly until such time when he can get a good set of players,” Vestil said.

On the other hand, Dr. Potenciano Larrazabal III, a veteran marathoner whose family owns CDU, expressed last year his intent in putting up his own training pool that will produce world-class runners.

Although that dream has not yet materialized, Larrazabal said he is looking into the possibility of creating a specialized program.

This idea was coined after the success of his monthly event, the Run for Sight, last year.

Next month, CDU will be staging its 5th University Run on at the CDU campus at the North Reclamation Area as the opening salvo of its annual intramurals.
