San Sebastian gets quarters slot

SAN Sebastian-Excelroof bucked a slow first set as it fashioned a 27-25, 25-21, 25-18 victory over Perpetual and earned a playoff for the last quarterfinal berth in the 7th Shakey’s V-League second conference at the Arena in San Juan Sunday.

Guest player Suzanne Roces, Karen Berbano, and Elaine Cruz delivered the last three spikes against a hit by the Altas as the Lady Stags posted their fourth straight sweep in the premiere volleyball tilt.

Thai import Jeng Bualee finished with a 27-point output and drew solid support from Roces, who had 15, and Joy Benito, who tossed in 11 hits.

“Our objective is to win as many games as possible,” said San Sebastian coach Roger Gorayeb.

Sandra delos Santos led Perpetual with nine hits while Ronerry dela Cruz had eight and Claire Bulatao and Nica Guliman finished with six apiece.

The loss was Perpetual Help’s third against a lone win in the tournament sponsored by Shakey’s Pizza and organized by Sports Vision.

San Sebastian, backed by Excelroof, guns for a fifth straight win against Adamson on Thursday then take on National U on August 1 before wrapping up its eliminations campaign against Far Eastern University on August 12.

In the other contests, Lyceum of the Philippines University blanked listless College of St. Benilde, 25-13, 25-13, 25-15.

Four Lady Pirates scored in double digits to power Lyceum to its second win in four outings.

Guest player Mary Jean Balse made 18 points, followed by Joy Cases with 15 hits while Jamie Pena and Dahlia Cruz added 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Giza Yumang topscored for the Lady Blazers with a measly eight-point output with guest player Zharmaine Velez adding seven hits.

Meantime, FEU forged a three-way tie with Lyceum and Adamson in the team standings (2-2) after it derailed the attempt of the Lady Falcons for a solo second spot, 25-19, 25-22, 25-16.

Guest player Rachelle Daquis scored 16 points while Michelle Carolino and Monique Tiangco combined for 27 hits to upset the San Marcelino-based tossers.
