Cop killed, village chief hurt in shooting incidents

A POLICEMAN was killed while a village chief was wounded on separate shooting incidents in the province of Basilan, a police official said Wednesday.

Basilan Provincial Police Office (BPPO) officer-in-charge Abubakar Tulawie identified the victims as Police Officers Rashid Abubakar and village chief Roland Ura.

Tulawie said that Abubakar was shot to death by unidentified gunman with a caliber .45 pistol around 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at an abandoned house owned by Utoh Anding in Sitio Budbud, Marketsite village, Isabela City, the capital of Basilan province.

He said initial investigation showed successive gun fires were heard after Abubakar was seen entering the abandoned house.

He said Abubakar suffered multiple gunshot wounds and died on the spot.

He said responding policemen led by Chief Inspector Edwin Placio rushed to the crime scene but failed to catch the suspect who immediately fled after the incident.

All possible motives are being looked into to establish the motive of the incident as well as unmask the suspect, Tulawie said.

Tulawie said Ura, the village chief of Matatag, Lamitan City, was shot and wounded around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at his residence.

Tulawie said Ura was shot and wounded by still unidentified gunmen, who immediately fled.

Ura, who was suspended from his post for three months effective June 9, was transferred to a hospital in Zamboanga City for further medical treatment, Tulawie said. (Bong Garcia)
