Increased crop infestation observed

THE Provincial Agriculture Office in Bacolod City reported that there has been an increasing incidence of crop infestation in Negros Occidental.

Provincial Agriculturist Engineer Igmedio Tabianan said that as of Thursday, 454.96 hectares of rice, corn and sugarcane land were already affected by the infestation.

The town of San Enrique reported the biggest crop damage at P164,106.80.

Other towns and cities affected are Murcia - 10 hectares, Candoni - .25 hectares, Kabankalan - 2.30 hectares, Ecsalante - 40 hectares, Silay City - 28 hectares, Cadiz City - 3 hectares, Himamaylan - 14 hectares, and Talisay City - .21 hectares.

Army worms, on the other hand, infested some vacant lots in Moises Padilla, La Castellana, Calatrava and EB Magalona.

Tabianan also reported to Governor Alfredo Marañon that his office had noted the re-occurrence of Rice Black Bug in La Carlota City, Valladolid, San Enrique and Talisay City.

Rats, which are also damaging the crops, are being monitored in some parts of Himamaylan, La Castellana, Valladolid and Talisay City. Locusts are also being monitored in two barangays of Kabankalan.

The Agriculture Office, according to Tabianan, provides technical assistant to farmers through the procurement and distribution of pest control agents and other related equipment. (TED)
