Village polls delay uncertain

THE postponement of barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) election is uncertain.

Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Regional Director Evelyn Trompeta said Friday hat the barangay election slated on October 25 will push through.

"If we follow the law, as there is no postponement yet or whatever action in Congress, (the elections) will push though," said Trompeta, who was in the Negros Occidental on Friday for the signing of a memorandum of agreement (MOA) and formal turnover of the European Union grant for the province.

Trompeta said only Congress can postpone the scheduled election.

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) scheduled the registration of regular voters for the barangay polls on August 1 to 10 and on August 6 to 15 for the SK voters.

Comelec personnel from the towns and cities of Negros Occidental recently attended an orientation seminar on preparations for the barangay election and on operating the new computer equipment provided by Comelec Manila for the registration of voters.

Trompeta said all regional directors of the DILG are set to meet with new DILG Secretary Jesse Robredo on August 5 in Manila. (TED)
