Blu Girls clinch title playoff (2:07 p.m.)

MANILA -- The Philippine Blu Girls clinched a berth in the championship match for the ASEAN Women’s Softball Championship in Jakarta, Indonesia over the weekend after scoring twin victories.

The Blu Girls first ended its eliminations campaign with a 9-0 rout of Singapore in just five innings as Joy Lasquite and Veronica Belleza combined for a one-hit job.

They later posted a 4-1 repeat win over Indonesia-Red in the upper half of the Final Four to move a win away from winning the crown.

Final Four format pitted the top seed team (Philippines) against the no. 2 squad (Indonesia-Red), with the winner advancing outright in the title match.

Meanwhile, Indonesia and Thailand will have a knockout duel to determine the Philippines’ opponent in the finals.

Amateur Softball Association of the Philippines president Jean Henri Lhuillier, in a telephone call to ASAPHIL operations manager Jun Veloso, congratulated the Blu Girls for making it to the championship phase.

“You are amazing. Beating all your rivals in abbreviated fashions and without allowing any run is already an accomplishment. Play well in the finals and bring home the championship,” Veloso quoted Lhuillier as saying. (Virgil Lopez/Sunnex)
