Queen of Peace escaped Batch 2009, 93-92 in SJI cagefest

QUEEN of Peace Parish snatched the victory from the jaws of defeat as it survived over Batch 2009, 93-92 while Phoenix 99/2k turned back Batch 1996/97/98, 67-58 in the ongoing 3rd SJI Alumni Basketball Friendship Cup played at the Msgr. John B. Liu Activities Center.

With 1.7 seconds remaining, QPP John Dustin Chua inbounded from the backcourt and issued a long pass to Ritche Militante positioned near the top of the key of the free throw line. Militante crowded by 2 players was able to tap the ball to a waiting Rey Pandoro in the shaded area and banked the shot as the buzzer sounded.

Overconfident QPP with a 15-points lead with 7 minutes remaining decided to play some of their role players and almost regretted their decision as Richard Uy and Kevin Ramos nailed the last 15 pts. of Batch 2009. Uy made 2 free throws with 1.7 sec. remaining to grab its 1st lead in the 2nd half.

In the quarter Militante had 13 pts. and Pandoro with 6 pts. while Uy and Ramos fired 12 pts. apiece.

On the other hand, in the 1st game Paolo Li was unstoppable in the 1st quarter as he netted 16 pts. outscoring the team of Batch 97/98/99 for  a 22-12 lead.

Both teams managed to score 14 pts. in the 2nd quarter as Phoenix remained on top at 36-26  at the break as Phoenix Rhett Demontverde and Jason Yap combined for 11 pts. while Daniel Tan  had 5 pts. for Batch 97/98/99.
