35 deaths due to road mishaps recorded

FROM January to August 1, 35 persons died due to vehicular accidents in Bacolod City, the Bacolod Traffic Management Unit (TMU) said.

TMU head SPO1 Dennes Perma said for the month of July, almost 82 motorcycle accidents have been recorded, slightly lower that the 91 motorcycle accidents recorded in the month of June.

Perma said most of the fatalities in motorcycle accidents were not wearing helmets when the mishap occurred, causing instantaneous death when the persons’ heads impacted with hard objects.

He stated that the TMU is now putting several signage in the city streets reminding motorcyclists to always wear their helmets when traveling.

Bacolod City Police Office officer-in-charge Celestino Guara also warned the motorists that his men are ordered to strictly implement the "no helmet, no travel" policy of the City Government.

He disclosed that, as of August 4, TMU had apprehended and confiscated the driver’s licenses of more than 100 motorcyclists who were not wearing helmets. (Merlinda A. Pedrosa)
