Aquino, Binay to lead YOG sendoff (3:09 p.m.)

MANILA -- President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III and Vice President Jejomar Binay will lead the well-wishers of the nine-man Philippine contingent bound for the 1st Youth Olympic Games slated August 14-26 in Singapore.

The party will be held at the Karate gym of the Philsports Arena (formerly Ultra) in Pasig City starting 6 p.m. Friday.

The nine Filipinos are part of the 3,600 athletes competing in 26 Olympic events, to be led by world weightlifting champion Patricia Llena, in the YOG, which features athletes 14-18 years old from around 205 countries.

Aside from Llena, who was also designated RP flag bearer during the formal opening, others on the team are promising tennis star Jeson Patrombon, taekwondo jin Kirk Barbosa, swimmers Jasmine Alkhaldi and Jessie Lacuna and the 3-on-3 basketball team of Cris Michael Tolomia, Jeron Teng, Michael Anthony Pate and Bobby Ray Parks Jr. (Virgil Lopez/Sunnex)
