NEGROS Occidental Governor Alfredo Marañon Jr. said that the transfer of the provincial jail to its new site at the Provincial Government property in Barangay Tabunan, Bago City will take place this month.

Marañon stated that the new provincial jail main building was already complete. The site is good for the rehabilitation of the inmates because of its wider area. It will provide a place where inmates can engage in some livelihood projects, such as gardening, as it is located in a much wider area than the existing one at Gatuslao St. in Bacolod City, the governor added.

The project was initiated under the term of the late governor Joseph G. Marañon. The construction of the building was undertaken under the watch of former governor Isidro Zayco who succeeded the deceased governor.

The perimeter fence for the new jail and the concrete bedding for the inmates are expected to be completed this month.

Vice Governor Genaro Alvarez suggested that, once the old provincial jail is vacated, it should be converted into a dormitory for students coming from outside of Bacolod who study in the city. The proposed Provincial Government-operated dormitory will offer lower rates that the prevailing rates charged by private dormitories.

However, the historical significance of the old provincial jail will still be preserved, Alvarez said. (Teresa Ellera-Dulla)
