Police eye second suspect in Zambo bombing

POLICE are looking into the possibility that there is a second suspect involved in Thursday’s bomb explosion at the Zamboanga International Airport, a top local official said.

Mayor Celso Lobregat said Saturday that the second suspect could also be the second fatality in the bombing at the arrivals area of the airport.

Lobregat was referring to Hatimil Haron Yacob, one of the two people who died in the bomb explosion.

The first fatality was Reynaldo Apilado, whom authorities identified as the bomb carrier. He died on the spot after the bomb he was carrying in his backpack prematurely exploded, police said.

Twenty-four others, including Sulu Governor Abdusakur Tan and a 69-year-old British national, were wounded in the bomb explosion that took place around 6:15 p.m. Thursday.

Yacob expired around 7:40 p.m. Thursday while undergoing medical treatment at a hospital.

Philippine National Police Director-General Jesus Versoza said Saturday that investigators were reviewing the video captured by the airport’s closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera to determine the actual incident.

The CCTV cameras will also aid investigators in identifying other possible suspects in the bomb attack, Verzosa said. (Bong Garcia)
