Sabaldan: Emcor sports as a CSR and SP sports for the environment

PAOLO Tancontian's pre-Kadayawan judo and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu invitational tournament over the weekend was a big success.

Tournament director Janet Sy-Tancontian said this was largely due to the support of the private sector namely the Campo Agua Resort of Paul Borromeo in Toril as the host, Starex Auto Parts of Mr. And Mrs. Jojo Acla, Coca Phils., Mix FM 105.9, Silver Water Phils., Anotec Environmental Products, Atty. R. Malaki, Michael Dakudao, Jan Hao and Sun.Star Davao through this column.

While Paolo's twin (martial arts) brother coach Rommel Tan also lend technical and material support while also doing a tournament in karate the following day Sunday with TKS Petron as the major sponsor and Coach Darren Evangelista of Easmi also providing material and technical support.

Coach Jun Te's regional taekwondo has Tropang Growee Philippines Taekwondo Association and mother organization the World Taekwondo Federation supporting the 2010 regional inter-school Taekwondo Championship. The Atrium of Gaisano Mall Sunday was all filled up with young and very young taekwondo jins all 250 of them from as far as Socksargen and General Santos City.

The sports community through its kind sponsors went ahead in heeding the call of the city government for more private sector participation in making the 2010 Kadayawan Festival doubly successful.

This as more and more groups in both government and private sector are turning to sports in implementing its corporate social responsibility (CSR) and as a way of increasing public consciousness in protecting the environment.

First to surface this month in time for the citywide thanksgiving celebration of the Kadayawan is Rain Baco whose 12th Jolibee Family Fun Run on Sunday August 15 is dedicated towards protecting our watershed with their adopt-a-tree program aside from converting the half marathon and fun race into one wholesome family sports affair.

Last Thursday at the Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA), all of them appeared with Davao City Councilor Marissa Salvador-Abella reliving the work of his councilor father Pedring Salvador as a neophyte legislator from the same place of the second district of Davao City.

We were inspired by her presence and unselfish pronouncement of continuing what the committee on environment of the Sangguniang Panlunsod has already done this past eight years and that is the Flight of the Eagles, a mountain bike fun ride for the preservation of the Davao Watershed, now on its 9th year run under her watch.

In the lead role of the latest edition of the sports writers' forum is the 1st Mayor Inday Sara Cup, a level 2 shooting competition which will showcase the best of the country's shooting team on August 20 and 21 at the Maa shooting ranges.

The shootfest is also initiated by the private sector although named in honor of Mayor Duterte, the first and youngest woman chief executive of the city, who is also adept in handling rifle and close-quarter-battle handguns.

Mikee Aportadera announced the holding of the national shootfest together with his own pet project the URCC Digmaan, also a festival offering for the increasing number of mix martial arts enthusiasts in Davao City and the region.

Unlike the major events the Indak-Indak and Floral Float Parade which will only be a daylong bursts of colors and culture, sports festivities will continue on a much bigger scale as Emcor is bringing in the country's top professional golf players to play in tandem with the amateur golfers in a One-Ball, Twosome alternate play all 200 of them in the first ever Davao Pro-Am golf tournament at the Apo Golf and Country Club September 1, 2 and 3. Samsung takes the lead role as major sponsor together with the rest of the suppliers of dependable and modern appliances.

Emcor's multi-sports advocacy as a corporate social responsibility includes the 2nd JVR Cup Badminton Tournament at the Smash and Drop also last Saturday and the 30-school chess tournament now entering the culmination round after the elimination round last July 17 with the matches being held every Saturday so as not to disrupt the classes of the chess players.
