Palace expresses hope on Luisita settlement

MALACAÑANG is hoping that the compromise agreement between the Hacienda Luisita Inc. (HLI) and its farmer-workers would be upheld by the Supreme Court to put a closure to the land dispute.

In an interview Sunday, Presidential Spokesman Edwin Lacierda said they welcome the compromise agreement which will still be submitted to the SC.

“We welcome the development and we continue to hope that there would be a peaceful resolution to the Hacidena Luisita issue,” he reiterated.

Hacienda Luisita is owned by the Cojuangco family, the maternal relatives of the President Benigno S. Aquino III.

He said the President had been informed about the out-of-court negotiations and eventually the compromise deal that was reached.

Lacierda said that majority of the farmer beneficiaries prefer the stock distribution option (SDO) contrary to previous reports that the farmers prefer land distribution.

Communications Group Secretary Herminio Coloma urged critics to just give the compromise deal a chance and await the Supreme Court’s ruling on the issue.
