Governor stands neutral on village, SK polls issue

WHILE most of local politicians favor the deferment of barangay elections, Misamis Oriental Governor Oscar S. Moreno expressed neutrality on the issue.

Almost all local officials have expressed favorable opinion on the deferment of the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections, including Representatives Rufus B. Rodriguez and Cagayan de Oro Mayor Vicente Y. Emano.

As the Commission on Elections (Comelec) started the registration for the October 12 barangay and SK polls, Moreno said he is uncertain whether or not the political exercise will push through.

"But I believe majority of the Congress (members) will support for the postponement of the barangay and SK elections due to huge expenses," Moreno said.

"For me kung madayon okey lang ug kung dili walay problema tungod sab lagi sa gasto, so bahala na ang Congress (For me, it’s okay if it pushes through and I would have no problem if it won’t because of the expenses, so it’s up to the Congress)," Moreno added.

He said if the Congress could not pass a law to postpone the elections, "the Comelec is duty-bound to conduct elections as mandated by the law.”

Meanwhile, Comelec Provincial Election Supervisor Carlito L. Ravelo said they are preparing and considering the elections to push through as scheduled unless a law postponing it is passed. (Annabelle L. Ricalde)
