UC tames Cobras

THE University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters sowed terror across the league as they stomped on the Southwestern University (SWU) Cobras, 82-66, in the collegiate action of the 2010 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) basketball tournament at the Cebu Coliseum last Sunday.

The Don Bosco Technology College (DBTC) Greywolves, on the other hand, stunned the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Panthers, 76-67, in the other

game.

It took only a few minutes of the opening quarter for the Webmasters to make their presence felt behind the relentless attacks of center June Mar Fajardo.

Although UC lost hold of the lead briefly early in the second period, its second stringers regained control of the game behind a 15-4 run with just 1:50 left in the first half.

From a 39-35 lead at halftime, Fajardo then scored the first eight points in the second half to give UC a 47-35 lead at 7:56 of the third.

SWU showed some resistance when they pulled to within five points, 47-42, through the efforts of Rene Pacquiao, who scored seven points.

However, the next five minutes proved too trying for the Cobras as they could only score one field goal until the end of the penultimate quarter, while UC sailed with 16 points.

Fajardo scored a game-high 21 points, Edward Pao added 12 and rookie guard Gerald Ampoon contributed 11.

Pacquiao topscored for SWU with 14 points, while Cresente Litorja contributed 13. Arrd Evan Django and Jefferson Pria scored 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Meanwhile, DBTC banked on a strong third quarter performance of Christopher de la Rama, to overcome a 30-32 debacle in the first half.

De la Rama, along with Clarito Hernando Jr. and Jan Pons Geraga, took care of business in the fourth period to pull a surprise over the Panthers.

Hernando topped DBTC with 15 points and Geraga and Archie Cortes finished with 12 points each. Earvin Dennis Ferraren topscored for USPF with 17, while Christian Tinoy made 13.

Today, it’s the University of the Visayas (UV) turn to see action.

The UV Baby Lancers will play the UC Baby Webmasters at 4:30 p.m. while the Green Lancers will gun for their third straight win against the University of San Carlos Warriors at 6 p.m. at the Cebu Coliseum.
