Shooting contests are crowd-drawers

THE organizer of the coming Mayor Inday Sara Cup shooting competition sees nothing wrong in putting up such tournament, saying such events draw in shooting enthusiasts from all over the country.

"There's no reason for us not to have one," Mikee Aportadera said during the regular Club 888 media forum in response to a question raised on whether such competition doesn't go with the stigma of being armed and dangerous.

Aportadera pointed out that while the name of Mindanao seems almost synonymous to the word "arms," the fact that Davao City was able to maintain peace and order doesn't give any reason for qualms.

"Shooting as a sport involves a lot of strict regulations and strict sanctions by the Philippine Practical Shooting Association (PPSA)," Aportadera said.

Aportadera revealed that around 200 shooters are expected to come for the Inday Sara Cup, which is the first national shooting competition hosted by Davao City.

He said the event would be a great help in promoting the Kadayawan and Davao tourism in general.

To be held on August 20-22 at the CPR Shooting Range along Diversion Road, the first Mayor Inday Sara Cup will become an official event of the city's Kadayawan Festival.

"Many shooters from all over the country will grace this event because this is right before gun ban is implemented for the barangay elections," Aportadera said.

Aportadera added that it would be a great opportunity to get to know some of the top shooters in the world who come originally from Davao.

Regular shooters will have to pay a registration fee of P1,000 while a discounted price of P800 will be given to members of the Philippine National Police (PNP), Philippine Navy and the Philippine Air Force, according to Aportadera.

"Winners will be given trophies and medals. There will also be raffle items from our sponsors," the organizer said. "What's more important than the cash prize is the acclaim you'll be getting afterwards."

Representatives from the Jethro Dionisio, Magno and Armscor shooting teams are expected to attend. Mayor Inday Sara Duterte and Vice Mayor Rodrigo Duterte will fire the ceremonial shots.
