August 23 declared as regular working day

PRESIDENT Benigno Aquino III on Wednesday declared August 23 as regular working day while retaining August 21, or his father's (Senator Benigno Aquino Jr.) death anniversary, a non-working holiday.

Presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda explained that in Republic Act 9492, the "President is empowered to modify holidays by law, order or proclamation."

"The purpose for observing Ninoy Aquino Day on August 21 instead of August 23 is to avoid the imposition of unnecessary financial burden upon the employers," he said.

"This will also ensure the continuity of government, business, and commercial transaction, promote productivity, while at the same time preserve the solemnity of the observance" he added.

President Aquino had a dilemma in moving the observance of his father's death to the nearest Monday in accordance to Holiday Economics law issued by former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

He earlier said that it is sensitive matter to decide on since it has a direct impact to his personal life. (Jill Beltran/Sunnex)
