Biz group wants more safety lights along toll road

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO -- The Pampanga Chamber of Commerce and Industry Inc. (PamCham) called on Wednesday the leadership of the North Luzon Expressway (NLEx) to provide more lights along busy areas of the toll road to ensure the safety of motorists and commuters.

In their letter to President Rodrigo Franco of the Manila North Tollways Corp., PamCham president Rene Romero and PamCham chairman emeritus Levy Laus said the NLEx, for some time now, has been the model infrastructure in modern thoroughfares in the country and has since become the standard on which all road infrastructures are benchmarked.

"We likewise support the security measures being implemented at the NLEx, which ensure a safe and hazard free journey north. Night time travel, however, is a cause for concern because of the danger the unlighted section of the NLEx pose to motorists. We particularly refer to the stretch from Sta. Rita, Bulacan to Sta. Ines, Mabalacat which we believe needs proper illumination," the PamCham letter read.

Laus and Romero said they are seeking the assistance of MNTC on the said concern as PamCham share in the commitment to development, concurrent with the safety and comfort of motorists and travelers plying the route.

"We qualify though that the NLEx merits priority concern at this time due to the considerable volume of vehicles traversing it in comparison with the SCTEx. However, we also do not disregard the fact that in the near future the SCTEx will likewise be heavily relied upon by northbound travelers, thus the need for adequate illumination is eventually worth considering," the PamCham officials said.

They said it is open to whatever proposed measures of the MNTC to address the said problem.

"We earnestly hope that our concern will be given your favorable attention and should you require further discussion of the matter, we are amenable to meet at your most opportune time and convenient venue," the PamCham officials said.
