9th Flight of the Eagles bikefest set to take off

ORGANIZERS will give away cash prizes to special awardees when the 9th Flight of the Eagles blasts off from the People's Park to Malagos Park in Calinan on Sunday.

Co-organizer Dominador A. Lopez, chair of the Watershed Management Coordinating Council, said Thursday the biggest delegation, family finisher riders, oldest rider, youngest rider, heaviest rider, heaviest bike and lightest bike are the special prizes to be given out.

"Cash prizes will also be awarded to the top three finishers of the fun race for junior below 17 years old and below, masters 40-above and fat boys rider 100 kilograms above and fat look categories," Lopez said during the Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at the Tower Inn.

He said some 540 cyclists riders are expected to join the 40-kilometer fun ride that is dubbed, "Biking for the Watersheds of Davao."

Lopez said former city councilor Leonardo Avila III, who spearheaded the event for the past eight years, will give the welcome remarks during the brief opening rites while current Davao City Councilor Marissa Salvador Abella, 1977 Mutya ng Dabaw, will flag off the riders.

Abella, chair of the City Council committee on environment and natural resources, had taken on Avila's program being a staunch advocate of environment protection herself.

Reigning Mutya ng Dabaw Jenelle Lee will also be among the guests during the affair.

The fun ride is also backed up by the Davao City Water District (DCWD), Federation of Off-Road Cycling Enthusiasts (Force), WMCC, Office of Councilor Abella and Avila, among others.
