Public warned on 'superbug gene' (11:12 a.m.)

THE Department of Health (DOH) has warned the public of a possible entry of New Delhi metallo-beta-lactamase (NDM-1), called "superbug gene" in the country.

NDM-1 is a gene that makes bacteria resistant to antibiotics.

DOH National Epidemiology Center director Eric Tayag said they already tied up with health authorities from other countries about the superbug.

There are currently no new drugs in the research pipelines that aim to stop NDM-1.

Tayag confirmed that it will be focused following reports on fatality from other countries due to the superbug that can also be spread through a simple hand shaking.

Medical experts from America also issued global alert against the superbug after British researchers warned that it is spreading fast around the world.

The health agency advised the public to maintain cleanliness in the body. (Sunnex)
