Aquino makes 1st SC appointment (6:25 p.m.)

MANILA -- President Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III on Friday appointed Maria Lourdes Aranal Sereno as Associate Justice of the Supreme Court.

This is the first appointment made by the President to the High Court.

Presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said the President does not know Sereno on a personal basis.

Lacierda said the President based his decision on the qualification of Sereno which he described as "admirable."

Sereno was born on July 2, 1960 in Manila. She graduated from the Ateneo de Manila University with a degree in A.B. Economics in 1980. She obtained her Bachelor of Laws (Cum Laude. Class Valedictorian) from the University of the Philippines College of Law (1984).

She has a Master of Laws from the University of Michigan Law School (1993). (Jill Beltran/Sunnex)
