‘Few disqualifications this year’

THE number of disqualified players in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) screening for other events is fewer.

“The teams have learned from experience that it pays to be prepared. This time, fewer than 10 players were disqualified,” said University of Cebu athletic director Bernard Ricablanca.

This list, however, is not yet final because according to Dr. Danilo Villadolid, they are still asking for more supporting documents.

“The usual reason for the disqualification is the lack of credentials. This time, the teams came in full force and with complete documents,” said Ricablanca, who attended the screening for the athletes of other events the other day at the Cebu Coliseum.

This year, the University of San Carlos (USC) basketball team’s roster was slashed to just nine after their players were disqualified because of credential problems.

Meanwhile, the coaches for chess, swimming and table tennis agreed to moved the screening of their events to another date because some of their papers are still with the Milo Little Olympics.

The opening ceremony of the Cesafi’s other events will be next weekend at the Cebu Coliseum. The earliest game will be the high school volleyball and football competitions, which will be on Aug. 21 at the Don Bosco gym and USC Talamban field.

On Sept. 11, the lawn tennis competition takes center stage in Alta Vista. The badminton competition is on Sept. 18, while athletics is on Sept. 24 at the Cebu City Sports Center.

Taekwondo will be on Sept. 25 at the Aznar Coliseum, while karatedo is on Sept. 26 at the University of San Jose Recoletos gym. Scrabble and Sepak takraw start on Sept. 25.

The college volleyball tournament will depend on the availability of a venue.
