Law amending barangay, SK term needed (3:28 p.m.)

MANILA -- With only two months left before the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections, the Congress would still need to pass a law amending the current measure to allow the preferences of President Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III.

“If the President certifies a certain measure as urgent, I think there's time and the fact of the matter is it also enjoys some support,” said House Speaker Feliciano “Sonny” Belmonte.

President Aquino earlier said that he wants the barangay and SK polls to push through in October despite proposals of some to postpone it to 2011.

Aquino however prefers to synchronize the next barangay and SK polls with the national and local elections in May 2013 therefore shortening their term by five months and to eliminate most of the SK officials so that the function of the group will only be carried by one representative.

“(In) trying to sync elections of national, local including barangay then of course that would be the law,” Belmonte added. (Kathrina Alvarez/Sunnex)
