Ifugao inmate torches co-prisoners

A PRISONER torched his fellow detainees inside Ifugao District Jail in Barangay Baguinge, Kiangan town last Monday, killing three.

Police reported that Floriano Tayaban, 56, who was recently convicted of rape, poured kerosene at his sleeping co-inmates and their personal belongings and then lit them up.

While the cell was burning, Tayaban poured more gas on the fire and hid himself in the comfort room inside the cell.

He got the kerosene from a torch used as emergency light during blackouts, police said.

Killed were inmates Efren Lindawan, Mamao Malingay and Willy Sairez. Lindawan died Wednesday morning at the Ifugao District Hospital, while Malingay and Sairez died immediately after the burning.

Another inmate, Joel Amado, is still fighting for his life at the hospital, while Nestor Moog, Anthony Dela Cruz, Mario Budihon, Lucas Caclini and Robert Madayag were declared out of danger by local doctors.

Cordillera police spokesman Superintendent Leon Talleo said Tayaban, who just received notice of his transfer to the National Bilibid Prison, will be punished for the crime.

It is, however, uncertain as to what charges will be added to Tayaban's conviction. (Ma. Elena Catajan)
