NU bags last quarters slot (2:37 p.m.)

MANILA -- National University (NU) bucked a two-set loss to sweep Perpetual Help in the last three sets, 12-25, 15-25, 25-23, 25-18, 15-12, and grab the last quarterfinals slot Sunday in the 7th Shakey’s V-League second conference at the Arena in San Juan.

Three members of the Sampaloc-based tossers scored double digits led by skipper Mervic Mangui with game-high 28 hits, 22 coming from kills while Maricar Nepomuceno and Denise Santiago churned out 15 and 10 points, respectively.

The Lady Bulldogs, who lost to title contender Ateneo de Manila in straight set fashion last August 8, showed stronger composure than the Lady Altas in the two-hour tiff.

NU was drafted to replace grandslam winner University of Santo Tomas after it begged off participation to allow players to rest in time for the UAAP volleyball wars next semester.

Sandra delos Santos paced the losing effort of Perpetual with 18 points, including 12 kills, while the triumvirate of Nica Guliman, Ronerry dela Cruz and April Sartin contributed 34 hits for the debuting squad. (Virgil Lopez/Sunnex)
