Sing ‘Sugbo’ after anthem, PB asks DepEd

ALL students in Cebu Province should be made to sing the provincial hymn “Sugbo” after they sing the national anthem in flag ceremonies, a Capitol lawmaker said.

The Provincial Board (PB) approved yesterday two resolutions in support of the Buwan ng Wika, which is celebrated in August.

The other resolution reminds radio stations to play at least four original Pilipino music (OPM) pieces, as ordered 23 years ago by then president Corazon Aquino.

PB Member Julian Daan, who gained popularity as radio performer “Esteban Escudero”, proposed both resolutions.

In one, he reminded the Department of Education’s provincial office to implement a 2006 ordinance that declared “Sugbo” (as arranged by the late Angel R. Cabilao) as the provincial hymn.

This means all public elementary and high schools are supposed to sing it right after the national anthem during the flag ceremony.

Daan, in his resolution, said the ordinance has not been strictly observed.

“The singing of ‘Sugbo’ is imperative to make our students have a feeling of pride in our place, since the song aptly describes our beloved province, the source of our dreams and aspirations,” the resolution stated.

The second resolution supports President Benigno Aquino III’s order for the National Telecommunications Commission to strictly implement Executive Order 255.

Aquino’s mother had issued this order in July 1987. It requires ratio stations with musical programs to broadcast at least four OPM compositions every hour.

The Organisasyon ng Pilipinong Mang-aawit reportedly reminded President Aquino about the order in a recent meeting.
