Station chiefs told: Step up drive vs. illegal drugs

BEEF up the drive against illegal drugs or be the next one to face relief.

This is what Supt. Romeo Santander, chief of the Cebu City Intelligence Branch (CIB), told the 10 police station chiefs who were saved from possible relief in the recent assessment of their anti-illegal drug operations.

“It doesn’t mean that they’re off the hook already, they need to improve,” Santander said.

While there were two stations that failed to comply with the required number of anti-illegal drug operations in the last three months, only one station chief was relieved.

Senior Insp. Jose Gesto of the Waterfront Police Station was given another chance because he had only stayed in the station for a month.

Only Chief Insp. Arthur dela Rosa was relieved from his post as chief of the Punta Princesa Police Station. He was replaced by his former deputy chief, Senior Insp. Percival Miasco.

Santander said it is important that the stations exert more effort now in their fight against illegal drugs to prevent crimes, especially since the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit is happening next month.

Five of the 11 police stations in the city received a warning for being slack in their anti-illegal drug campaign in May. These are Police Station 3 (Waterfront), 7 (Pardo), 8 (Talamban), 10 (Punta Princesa) and 11 (Mambaling). Their number rose to eight when Police Stations 1 (Pari-an), 4 (Mabolo) and 9 (Guadalupe) also received the warning last month.

In the recent assessment that was released last Thursday, only the police stations in Punta Princesa and Waterfront failed.

Police Stations 2 (Fuente), 5 (Carbon) and 6 (Sawang Calero) have consistently passed the assessment in the last three months.

Meanwhile, around 600 students and advisers from the different school’s Supreme Student Government will attend a two-day orientation and training on the fight against illegal drugs.

The Cebu Provincial Anti-Drug Abuse Commission will hold the Barkada Kontra Droga at the Ecotech Center in Lahug, Cebu City today and tomorrow.
