Capitol sends assistance to tornado-hit areas

CEBU Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia said they have already sent food supplies, blankets, mats and assorted children's clothes to the barangays affected by a tornado in Bantayan.

Capitol may also send financial assistance.

She called on mayors who have not yet entered into a memorandum of agreement with the National Food Authority to do that so they can easily get rice supply during disasters.

"You know who you are," the governor said.

Garcia said the Provincial Government’s role is to augment the assistance given by the local government unit.

Each municipal government, she said, is supposed to be the first to respond to every disaster or calamity in the locality.

Problems

Due to transportation problems, the Capitol will have to send supplies to the affected barangays in Bantayan.

Wilson Ramos, administrative officer-designate of the Provincial Social Welfare Office, said their staff cannot cross to the affected islet because of the low tide.

Based on their records, 18 houses made of light materials were destroyed while another four houses were damaged.

In Argao, there were 14 families affected and another one from Barangay Balisong. (RSA)
