Pakitang Gilas Wilcab Cup kicks off (11:05 p.m.)

MANILA -- Four teams will see action in the maiden staging of the Pakitang Gilas Basketball League Willie Caballes Cup unfolding Monday night at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum in Manila.

The tournament held in honor of the late Manila Bulletin assistant sports editor who also served as vice president of the Philippine Sportswriters Association opens with a double header pitting Say Chiz Smileys and Charlie's Dy-Mons at 7:30 p.m. before the duel between San Mateo Spurs and Johann Kendrick Tigerscribes.

Caballes' wife, Marilou Caballes, has been invited to do the ceremonial toss for the tournament.

Francis Ochoa of the Inquirer and Abac Cordero of the Philippine Star leads Say Chiz, while Noli Cortez of Malaya skippers the Dy-Mons along with Nelson Beltran of the Philippine Star and Inquirer's June Navarro.

The San Mateo Spurs is headed by Joey Villar of the Philippine Star and Joel Orellana of Business Mirror while the Tigerscribes is bannered by Cedelf Tupas of the Inquirer and Jeric Lopez of Manila Standard Today.

Backed by San Miguel Corporation and the Philippine Sportswriters Association, the tournament will adapt a double round robin format with the top two teams disputing the title. (Press Release)
