BACOLOD City Police Office Director Celestino Guara said Monday that they will strengthen the good relationship between police and members of the media in the city.

Guara said the move is in accordance with the directive of Police Regional Office-Western Visayas Director Samuel Pagdilao Jr.

Pagdilao underscored his directive by holding the regional Philippine National Police (PNP)-media relations seminar-workshop in Iloilo City last week.

Guara on Monday held a command conference of the Bacolod City Police Office (BCPO) at Police Station 1, where all the police station chiefs in the city were present. In that conference, Guara emphasized the important role of the media and the police in society.

"The PNP should understand the work of media and the media should also understand the work of the PNP," Guara said.

Last week, representatives from the tri-media and PNP officers from all over Western Visayas attended the PNP-media relations seminar at Iloilo City.

Pagdilao said they are trying to improve the working relationship of the PNP and the media.

It is our duty to inform the public because they have the right to know while the media plays an important role in the performance of this duty because the media helps serve as our extension in releasing information to the public, according to Pagdilao.

"I believe that we should be able to find a system that we will have a free-flowing communication and information," Pagdilao added.

Pagdilao also declared that the only way to promote a better relationship between the two organizations is to learn from each other.

"It is by learning each other's ways and fostering greater understanding that we can promote a better relationship," he said.

He assured members of the media that the police will work hard to find solutions to media killings in Western Visayas. (MAP)
