MISS Mexico Jimena Navarrete was crowned Miss Universe 2010 at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada while Philippines' pride Maria Venus Raj finished fourth runner-up.

The pageant named Jamaica’s Yendi Phillipps as first runner-up, Jesinta Campbell of Australia settled as second runner-up, and Anna Pslavska of Ukraine as third runner-up.

Other awards were also handed to Miss Thailand Fonthip Watcharatrakul for National Costume Award and Miss Photogenic, and Miss Australia for Miss Congeniality.

Venus competed with more than 80 stunning ladies and received overwhelming support not just from the Philippines but also from the Filipino community in Las Vegas.

To recall, the 21-year-old Bicolana was briefly dethroned after Binibining Pilipinas Charities, Incorporated (BPCI) discovered inconsistencies in her personal data.

The decision of BPCI was later on retracted for "humanitarian reasons" and Venus was reinstalled as the Philippines' representative to Miss Universe.

Venus is dedicating her win not only to her family and the Filipino people but also for co-beauty queen, Melody Gersbach, who died last Saturday in a road mishap in Camarines Sur.

She said Melody, also a Bicolana, pushed her to make it to the Miss Universe and was there when the controversy hounded her.

Ranking 1st on Twitter

While the pageant night was running smoothly in Las Vegas, the Philippines are tuned in to Venus' big day.

On the micro-blogging site Twitter, private individuals, known television personalities, designers and stylists also showed their support to the beauty queen.

Venus, even before the top 15 semifinalist were announced, was the number one trending topic on twitter.

Stars who expressed their support for the beauty titlist are Charice, eventologist Tim Yap, actress Heart Evangelista, Bossa Nova singer Sitti, Anne Curtis, Sunshine Montano, K Brosas, Gabe Mercadom, Phoemela Barranda and stylist Jenni Epperson.

"For me!!! Venus is still a winner.. She made us proud, the fact she made it that far!!! Wow!! Were proud of u!!!! Good job Venus!" Charlene Gonzales-Muhlach tweeted.

For others the win of Venus marks another beginning for the country after the devastating news Monday morning at Quirino Grandstand in Luneta Park, Manila.

"It took one man to bring the country to shame. let one woman bring back its flame," @maria_909 tweeted.

Meanwhile, a partylist group on Tuesday congratulated Raj for copping the fourth runner up honors in the 2010 Miss Universe pageant.

Ako Bicol partylist Representative Alfredo Garbin said she make the Philippines proud despite the several issues that surrounded her and the country in the days going up to the competition, including the bloody hostage drama on Monday.

“She has sparked hope for all that the Filipino name be cleared and redeemed in the international arena. Her mere entry to the top five finalists is achievement enough for the country and for all the Filipinos, who have prayed for and supported her throughout the competition,” he said.

The 22-year-old Raj is a native of Bato, Camarines Sur. She also won the Miss Bicolandia title in 2007. (Glaiza Jarloc/with Virgil Lopez/ Sunnex)
