Aquino accepts Manila police chief’s leave (4:35 p.m.)

MANILA -- President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III has allowed Manila Police Director Rodolfo Magtibay to go on leave of absence pending the investigation of the tragic hostage-taking Monday.

“I have directed General (Jesus) Verzosa to accept his offer of leave,” President Aquino said in a press briefing Wednesday.

Magtibay has offered to take a leave amid calls for him to do so due to alleged mishandling of the hostage crisis in Quirino Grandstand that led to a bloody ending. He served as the ground commander during the incident.

Aquino said the leave of Magtibay will be effective starting Thursday. (Jill Beltran/Sunnex)
