MORE sidewalk clean-up will be conducted as Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte said the city's traffic is on top of her priorities now that the Kadayawan Festival is over.
The mayor said she told Traffic Management Center (TMC) head Ret. Col. Desiderio Cloribel and City Planning and Development acting head Roberto Alabado that the sidewalks must be for pedestrian and the streets for vehicles.
"If there are exceptions to this general rule, these rules must be implemented strictly. Exceptions should not be given easily," Duterte said.
Duterte said the verbal order made by Vice Mayor Rodrigo Duterte that one-third of the pedestrian lane can be occupied by the vendors while the two-thirds should be cleared for pedestrians, stays in effect.
This verbal order was given by Vice Mayor Rodrigo Duterte when he was still city mayor, to give leeway for small trade earners.
"I told them the only exceptions are sidewalk vendors, who if they will not follow our conditions regarding the way they do their business on the street, they will have to be removed," Duterte said.
The mayor said sidewalk vendors should not even be there, but the City Government is making a small concession because this helps the vendors and the city's economy.
Duterte said her second order to Cloribel is to come up a seminar program for public utility vehicle drivers. Jeepney and taxi drivers will be given identification cards after completing the seminar, which will include road rules and courtesy.
"The seminars should be comprehensive and completed in one day only because they will not have earnings if the seminar will extend beyond one day," Duterte said.
The mayor's third order to the TMC head is to review the traffic signalization.
"Review of traffic signalization in areas with signal lights and to come up with observations so we can discuss what to improve on with the contractors," Duterte said. (Jade C. Zaldivar)
