THE Cebu City Government is open to extending financial assistance to Daanbantayan town after the Provincial Government refused to do so.
Mayor Michael Rama learned the town needs the assistance for its Haladaya Festival this Aug. 30.
Daanbantayan Mayor Maria Luisa Loot, upon the advice of Rep. Tomas Osmeña, sent to the Cebu City Hall yesterday the municipal council’s approved resolution requesting P500,000 as financial assistance.
Rama has not received the request but said the City is willing to help the town.
“Even if we don’t have enough money, sharing is a very important virtue, caring likewise, and most of all, serving, because putting all of these together, you will be showing the mother of all virtues…humility,” Rama said.
Osmeña advised Loot to ask for financial assistance after learning the mayor was scolded by Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia due to Daanbantayan’s failure to join the Capitol’s Pasigarbo sa Sugbo Festival early this month.
Loot was supposed to ask the governor for P300,000 as financial assistance that time.
However, she said they will still invite provincial officials, including the governor, to the festival. She will also invite Cebu City officials to attend.
“Amo silang imbitahon. Naa ra na nila ug dili sila motunga kay dili man pud malalis nga naa’y pinudyot nga natabang ang Kapitolyo sa Daanbantayan (We will invite them.
It’s up to them if they will show up or not. I can’t deny that the Capitol has also helped us),” Loot said.
Capitol consultant on information and revenue generation Rory Jon Sepulveda sees nothing wrong with the Cebu City Government helping Daanbantayan.
But he said there are projects that Rama needs to prioritize like the debt payments for the South Road Properties, the asphalting of roads and the renovation of the Plaza Independencia.
“It doesn't matter, it is not illegal. But the question is, are they in a position to help or are they doing it to spite the Provincial Government?” Sepulveda said.
“The City is faced with a lot of issues. It should address its own issues of funding,” Sepulveda said.
Osmeña said it’s a good move for the City to help Daanbantayan and other towns in the province.
The congressman is also willing to help municipalities that were allegedly neglected by the Provincial Government.
“As vice chairman of the appropriations committee in Congress, ato silang tabangan kutob sa atong mahimo. Hatagi lang ko ug higayon (I will help them. Just give me a
chance),” Osmeña said.
Loot said Daanbantayan wants to avail of the big brother program of the City Government.
She also promised that they will send a contingent to next year’s Sinulog Festival after taking a break for several years. (ETB/JGA)
