Miss Universe 'viral' video

WHILE the Miss Universe 2010 pageant night is happening in Las Vegas last August 23, four gay friends decided to record their reactions here in the Philippines.

Hours after the Miss Universe pageant, designers Veejay Floresca and Martin Bautista together with friends Lex Librea and Aleq Africa posted their video on YouTube for the viewing pleasures of their friends.

They never expected that big things will happen next.

“Ang pinaka focal point ng video hindi kami, but the reaction, how passionate we are with the competition."

Less than 24 hours, the viral video was featured in hollywood site "dlisted" and Perez Hilton's official blog.

It was also picked up by the Australian television and local programs like Bandila and 24 Oras.

As of this posting, the video was viewed more than 700,000 times on Youtube.

In a telephone interview with Veejay, he told Sun.Star that it was actually a yearly ritual of their group to do something special every coronation night of the Miss Universe.

He said last year there were sash and they do sometimes call catering services just to celebrate the most beautiful day in the universe.

“Every year kasi we do that. It's a bonding moment for all of us, I think for all the gays. Parang yun ang world cup o fight ni Manny Pacquiao for us. It's really a bonding moment for us."

He further said it was a coincidence that the four of them were wearing white "pambahay" clothes when the video was recorded.

It was Floresca who edited the video and it was shot in Librea's house in Paranaque City. Floresca was part of the first season of "Project Runway" Philippines.

According to the designer, they got overwhelming response from Twitter and Facebook and he even received words from New Zealand and Holland.

"I'm overwhelmed because I really never expected that its going to be that popular. Second, its happiness because I think a lot of people who saw the video, they have one reaction and talagang nasapasaya sila," he said.

Floresca said Filipinos needed four minutes of laughter just to forego the frustration everyone is experiencing right now after the hostage-taking incident in Quirino Grandstand Monday evening.

When asked if he heard any news from Miss Universe fourth runner-up Philippines pride Maria Venus Raj, he said the beauty queen texted him already.

“She said that she was very touched when she was able to watch our reactions. She sends her appreciation for the support."

To those who posted and at some point laughed on the content of this video, Floresca, in behalf of the whole group, is thankful for the nice words and response.

“We need to spread joy and laughter to everyone because laughter is still the best medicine,” he ended in his pageant-esque way. (Glaiza Jarloc/Sunnex)
