Rongavilla is new MPD chief (10:01 a.m.)

THE Philippine National Police announced Thursday night that Chief Superintendent Roberto Rongavilla is the new chief of the Manila Police District.

This as Senior Superintendent Francisco Villaroman, yet to grab his seat as the new MPD chief to replace Manila Police Director Rodolfo Magtibay, was suddenly relieved.

On Wednesday, Magtibay was rlieved from his post after Monday's hostage crisis ended with the death of eight foreign tourists.

Villaroman's appointment was earlier criticized because he is facing various charges before different courts including bribery, kidnapping, and selling illegal drugs.

But he denied all the charges saying there are people out to discredit him. He said the cases were only accusations filed last 2001 and 2002.

He added he was hurt by his sudden replacement.

"Masama syempre ang loob ko sapagkat I've been a very professional officer for 34 years. I have 88 medals all in all," he said. (Sunnex)
