Tuition aid for 1 million students (2:56 p.m.)

MANILA -- A Cebu lawmaker disclosed that some one million students enrolled in private high schools nationwide will receive tuition aid as prescribed by law.

Representative Eduardo Gullas (first district, Cebu), an educator, said that under the Government Assistance to Students and Teachers in Private Education (GASTPE) Law, high school students should receive between P5,000 to P10,000 each in tuition aid.

Gullas said a total of P5.8 billion in fresh funding has been set aside to subsidize the tuition of private high school students under the GASTPE Law. The amount is contained in the P207.3 billion allocated for the education sector from the proposed P1.645-trillion General Appropriations Act of 2011.

According to the lawmaker, the amount of P5.8 billion is 49 percent greater than the P3.9 billion earmarked in 2010 for GASTPE. This year's allocation is meant to help some 700,000 students.

In the document produced by the Palace, Aquino has required the Department of Education to post the names of beneficiaries and the participating private schools in the department's website. (Kathrina Alvarez/Sunnex)
