Fiesta sponsors urged to remove bunting

THE City Government urges the sponsors of the recent fiesta celebration in Cagayan de Oro to “clean up your mess.”

Councilor Dante Pajo, chair of the City Council committee on health and sanitation, said sponsors during the fiesta celebration are given only until the first week of September to remove their bunting within the city streets.

“These bunting are now considered trash, hanging with the spaghetti wires. It is time to clean up your mess,” Pajo said.

The City Government had earlier passed an ordinance banning the hanging of bunting within the city.

However, the City Council temporarily “lifted” the ordinance last month and allowed the sponsors to put bunting to make the fiesta celebration livelier.

Under the arrangement, fiesta sponsors are allowed to put bunting but must remove them after the celebration.

Pajo said as promised, fiesta sponsors should comply with what they have agreed earlier.

“In fairness to San Miguel which has quite a number of bunting, they are now slowly removing them and hopes to finish it before the end of the first week of September. I hope other sponsors would follow,” Pajo said.

He said the city’s garbage collectors have already “done their part” in cleaning the streets of “fiesta trash.”

On August 21, the City Government in cooperation with different private and non-government agencies conducted a clean-up drive in preparation for the fiesta celebration.

Pajo said a regular clean-up drive would be held every third Friday of the month and everyone is urged to do their share by cleaning their own surroundings. (Nicole J. Managbanag)
