Team formed to monitor city drainage areas

THE City Government formed a team tasked to monitor drainage areas in the Davao City and arrest anyone found intentionally clogging drainages.

Assistant City Administrator Erwin Alparaque said some people intentionally throw sacks or heavy debris into the drainage, clogging them and that water rises when rain comes.

Drainage Maintenance Unit (DMU) head Yusoph Jimlani echoed Apalarque's warning, saying they have already recovered four sacks in one drainage.

"Itong ating mga magagagaling na enterprising citizens, mag-antay lang sila and there will be apprehensions made," irked Jimlani said.

Jimlani announced last week that 74 workers of DMU were removed from their position, leaving their number to less than a hundred.

Jimlani however clarified Monday that those removed were contractual employees.

"They were due to end in June…I advised the team leaders to evaluate the performance of their men and those who do not work well were sacked," Jimlani said.

Meanwhile, City Engineer Gestuveo Jr. said he will submit to City Mayor Sara Duterte the report on the identified low-lying areas in the city that are usually flooded.

"There are 23 areas that need to be looked into. This covers Toril to Sasa area," Gestuveo said.

City Administrator Alparaque also said they will approve orders to demolish structures covering drainage areas. ( Jade C. Zaldivar)
