2 women lose P600,000 worth of items to ‘laglag barya’ gang

A “LAGLAG barya” gang has struck again, victimizing two persons in one day in Lapu-Lapu City and Mandaue City.

More than P600,000 worth of items were taken from Virginia Yu and Manilyn Maranga Mar last Monday.

According to the report of SPO4 Jose Roel Nalzaro of Lapu-Lapu City Police Station 5, Yu, 43, was pulling out of the parking lot of the Marina Mall around 4:30 p.m. when a man knocked at the back of her vehicle.

He told her that coins and keys had fallen out of her car.

Yu got out to check, but found nothing. When she returned to the car, she discovered that her Samsung S5 worth P36,000, her Sony Experia Z3 worth P35,000, her Chanel bag worth P40,000 and her wallet containing P45,000 cash, credit and debit cards and government identification cards were gone.

Yu is a manager of Visayas Land in Mepz 1 and resides in Sitio Kagudoy, Barangay Basak, Lapu-Lapu City.

Two hours later in Mandaue City, Mar had just bought medical kits at a pharmacy at the corner of A.S. Fortuna St. and Hernan Cortes St.

Modus operandi

As she was about to leave, a man knocked at the back of her vehicle and told her something had fallen out of her car.

Mar, 29, said she tried to ignore the man, but he insisted.

According to the initial investigation of SPO4 Marcos Noval Jr., Mar got out and found some items on the ground. The man, though, had disappeared.

When she returned to her car, she noticed one of the doors was not properly closed.

Her shoulder bag worth P15,000 was gone.

The bag contained an Apple iPhone 6 (P34,000), a Samsung Note 1 (P30,000), a small pouch with P7,000 cash and receipts and three bank checks for P234,000, P111,500 and P32,000.

She also told police she lost a Louis Vuitton wallet worth P59,000 containing P2,000 cash, credit cards and ATM cards, her driver’s license and other important documents.

Mar drove back to the pharmacy to look for the items, to no avail.

Mar, an executive manager of South Speak English School in Barangay Bakilid, Mandaue City, lives in Grand Villas Subdivision in Guadalupe, Cebu City.

Noval and his team reviewed the closed-circuit television camera of the Mandaue Command Post and found out that three men and a woman conspired to steal Mar’s belongings.

Authorities in both cities are still trying to identify the perpetrators.
