Lanete gets third NCAA POW plum

MANILA –San Beda’s sweet-shooting guard Garvo Lanete peaked in time to hand the Red Lions a sweep of the 16-game elimination round at the 86th National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) men’s basketball.

Anchoring on its “REDemption” campaign, the Red Lions proved that heavens will paint a championship crown for them this year following a match with 2009 finals tormentor San Sebastian Stags last September 29.

Lanete drilled-in eight of his 23 points in the last canto to help the Lions repeat its mastery over the Stags this season, 90-82.

The sweep was San Beda’s and NCAA’s first since San Sebastian did the same trick in 12 games in 1997 while nailing an outright championship.

Lanete bested teammate Sudan Daniel in the NCAA Press Corps Accel/Fil-Oil Player of the Week award backed by Terrilicious meat products and Gatorade, and given by the country’s sportswriters covering the oldest collegiate league. (Virgil Lopez/Sunnex)
